All the Details

Thirty-five years ago, in the early morning hours following Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration, two men, dressed as police officers, tricked their way into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and pulled off the greatest art theft in world history. Thirteen pieces of art, including masterpieces and sketches by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Manet, and Degas, were stolen, now valued at more than $500 million. Despite an intense FBI investigation and a $10 million reward for their return, no one has ever been arrested, and nothing has ever been recovered. Stephen Kurkjian, an acclaimed three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The Boston Globe, has written what is regarded as the most authoritative account of the crime, MASTER THIEVES – The Boston Gangsters Who Pulled Off the World’s Greatest Art Heist.

A Boston native, Kurkjian graduated from Boston public schools, including Boston Latin School, Boston University, and Suffolk Law School. During his 40-year career at The Globe, Kurkjian was a founding member and then editor of The Globe’s Spotlight Team as well as chief of the Globe’s Washington Bureau. He retired in 2008.
