All the Details
Betrayed by the government he served, he became a trusted advisor to the very mobsters he once pursued.
Fred G. Pastore was a towering 6'4" Chief of the IRS Intelligence Unit in Boston and one of the government’s most formidable investigators. Known as the “Eliot Ness of Boston,” Pastore pursued illegal gambling, tax fraud, and some of New England’s most notorious organized crime figures, including Raymond Patriarca and Jerry Angiulo.
But Pastore’s story took an extraordinary turn. After years spent investigating the underworld, he left government service. He reinvented himself as a private tax advisor, eventually earning the confidence of some of the very figures he had once pursued.
Decades later, Pastore’s grandson, Eddy Manfred Inserra III, discovered a remarkable collection of government memos, surveillance photographs, press clippings, case files, and handwritten notes that revealed a family history far more complicated than he ever imagined.
Join us at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum as Inserra shares the incredible true story behind his book, Confidence of the Mob. Inserra will be joined by Fred Pastore's nephew, Bobby Pastore, who learned during the research that the informant his uncle refused to name was his own father. Drawing from more than a decade of research, family archives, surveillance photographs, press clippings, case files, and a Western Union telegram Pastore sent to President Kennedy and Robert Kennedy at the White House, Inserra will take us inside a fascinating chapter of Boston history, one filled with mobsters, federal agents, political intrigue, betrayal, and the blurred line between law and loyalty.
For true crime fans and anyone fascinated by Boston’s colorful past, you won’t want to miss this story.
