Join us for the story of a remarkable collection and the people who shaped its journey across continents and generations. Lisa Pearson, Head of the Library and Archives at the Arnold Arboretum, will explore the bonsai collection assembled by Larz and Isabel Anderson and donated to the Arboretum in the 1930s.


Pearson brings to life the world of bonsai in Japan and America from the moment the Andersons started collecting, when these miniature trees captured the imagination of Western audiences. From the art and culture of bonsai in Japan to its early American enthusiasts, explore how these miniature trees became symbols of patience, beauty, and global exchange.


Nearly ninety years after their gift, the Andersons’ bonsai remain a source of wonder and delight for Arboretum visitors, standing as a living legacy of curiosity, stewardship, and cross-cultural connection.
